The manager of the Croydon kebab shop named the best takeaway in London at The British Kebab Awards 2018 has shared what their most popular dish is.
Greek on the Street, based at Boxpark Croydon, was named the joint winner alongside Wallington Express, in Stafford Road, Wallington, in the best takeaway in London category at the awards ceremony on Monday night (March 12).
Manager Alexandra Barikou said she felt the excitement of a “little kid taking a new toy out to play” upon finding out the restaurant had won the award.
She said “good quality food” is the key to success and revealed their most popular dish is the homemade chicken Gryos wrap – which is like chicken Shawarma for those who are yet to try it.
It is served either in the classic style with tzatziki, tomato, onion, chips or the Mediterranean style with houmous, tomato, onion, pickled cabbage.
Alexandra added: “We have had loyal customers and as time has gone on we have grown.
“I think having really good quality food and keeps our customers happy and really reflects on what we do.
“I think we are making a good trade in Croydon. We always have a big queue outside during the weekdays so I think people are really satisfied by us.
“We also serve really good food and we have regular customers coming back to eat here five days a week.”
Greek on the Street was one of five Croydon businesses nominated for the award.
Abra Kebabra, in Wickham Road, in Shirley; Planet Kebab, in Mitcham Road, in West Croydon; Kebab Centre, in Addington Road, in Selsdon and Brothers Kebab House, in Lower Addiscombe Road, in Addiscombe, were those also up for the prize.
A total of 12 finalists were competing for the sought-after prize.
Alexandra said: “We were not expecting [to win] at all. We were excited that we were nominated but we never expected to win.
“I was like a little kid taking a new toy out to play. The feeling is hard to describe it in words. It’s amazing and for us it’s a step forward. “It’s only a year and a few months since we opened but everything feels like it has fallen into place. It’s just amazing and it makes us feel like all our hard work is paying off.”Greek on the Street was also among the 10 finalists in the category for customer satisfaction, but lost out to Uni Kebab in Southampton.And Abra Kebabra’s Emrullah Sasmaz was left disappointed for the second time on the night after failing to win the chef of the year category at the awards, which was held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel and attracted more than 1,000 guests.
