‘All the staff are doing their best and it shows’
A Gillingham kebab shop has been named Britain’s best regional takeaway at a national award ceremony.
Master Kebabs, in Watling Street, took the prestigious gong at the sixth annual British Kebab Awards in London last night (March 12).
The popular takeaway beat Hidden Gem in Weymouth and Istanbul Grill in Woking for the top award.
Now, owner Ismail Aydin, 40, has spoken of his delight at winning the award and having the shop’s quality acknowledged.
He said: “It was amazing. We were amazed and excited
“We knew we were in the top three so it wasn’t a big, big surprise, but in the end it’s a competition and it feels great to win.”
Kebab experts
With twenty five years of experience in the kebab industry, Mr Aydin said his knowledge of what makes a great kebab helped the shop bag the award.
He said: “It’s down to experience, I guess, and the different selection of spices and the way we marinate and make the kebabs ourselves.”
A family business, with Mr Aydin’s father and nephews working at the shop, he said the staff help to guarantee quality stays high.
He said: “All the staff are doing their best, everybody in this shop, and it shows.
Local customers travel for quality
Mr Aydin opened Master Kebabs in 2010 but previously ran other kebab shops across the Medway area, and he said loyal customers have been willing to travel in order to taste the best.
He said: “The customers come from all over the Medway area, even Sittingbourne and Strood.
“It makes us happy to see people come back again and again and it lets us know that we are doing well.
“For us the important thing is that we make our customers happy.
