A Cardiff kebab shop has been named the best in Wales at a national award ceremony.

Golden BBQ, on Caerphilly Road, scooped Best Kebab House in Wales at the British Kebab Awards in London’s Westminster last night (Monday March 12).

The Cardiff-based takeaway was crowned the Welsh winner at the British Kebab Awards

The popular Turkish takeaway, which also serves up pizza, burgers, wraps and fried chicken, stole the crown from last year’s winners – City Road’s Mezza Luna – while Wales Kebab, based in Abertridwr, Caerphilly , came highly recommended.

For the awards, members of the UK public nominated 5,012 of their favourite kebab shops, which were then whittled down to a shortlist of 153.

Hygiene, online satisfaction ratings and the number of #BritishKebabAwards tweets of support received by the contender were also taken into account.

The winners were revealed after a final round of judging by the British Kebab Awards judges.

“British foodies are showing their appreciation for this ancient style of cooking and competition is getting extremely hot,” said awards founder Ibrahim Dogus, adding that more than 1.3m kebabs are sold in the UK every day.

“This cuisine is coming of age in Britain and is involving some interesting twists.

“The kebab is very much on the march to becoming this country’s national dish.”
